Xander walked me up to my room on the second floor of the resort, and we stood in front of it while I brought my key fob out of my purse.

Everything was different.

I wasn’t even pregnant yet—surely, it couldn’t happen within the same day—but just the thought of him inside me was so real now that I couldn’t move on from it. I couldn’t get past it.

His baby.

What if it doesn’t work?

There was no reason it wouldn’t. We’d followed all the rules to the tee. Everything had gone to plan. Apart from the understanding and warmth that had started developing between us.

Was this some kind of Stockholm Syndrome? Why did I like him now?

He had been so gentle and sweet with me since we’d started this whole process. It was like the minute the ink had dried, he’d become a different person.

Or was it something else?

He had helped me off the hill when I’d fallen and sat with me. I’d assumed that was because he wanted something out of it—namely, the baby contract—but now I wasn’t as sure.

Had I completely misjudged this man?

“Thanks for the delicious meal,” I said.

“You’re welcome,” he replied.

I held the key fob limply, considering it. I would turn away from him, and that would be it. He’d go back to his suite, and I would have the rest of the evening to mull over what we’d just done. Potentially, I’d call Kara, and she’d mull over what we’d just done too.

God, that was a bleak outlook for the rest of the night.

“Do you want to come inside?” I asked. “Maybe have a drink. Water for me, and you can have…”

“Sure,” he said, his crystal blue gaze fixed on me. Those eyes were bright, full of potential. He wanted me again, and I wanted him.

Was it crazy?

I shook my head at myself and swiped the key fob to unlock the door.

We entered and I shut it behind us.

A soundtrack started up in my mind. “Love on the Brain” by Rihanna. Oh god, I had to stop. This was bullshit. I didn’t want him this bad. I didn’t.

Liar.

I walked to the bar fridge in the corner and opened it. I retrieved a water. “What would you like?” I asked and turned.

He stood close to me, his gaze sweeping down to my lips then lower. “Whatever you want to give me.”

Goosebumps rose on my arms. I came forward, holding the water bottle in a trembling hand. “I—I’ve already given you—I mean.”

He smirked at me.

A flash of anger rose, and I narrowed my eyes at him. “What’s so funny?”

“The situation,” he replied, drawing closer. His hand closed around the bottle and the outside of my hand.

“What’s the situation?” My voice didn’t tremble this time.

“I think you know.” He removed the bottle from my grasp and tossed it aside.

“What are you—?”

He drew me into his arms, cupped my cheeks in his warm palms and stole my breath just by the movement alone. “What do you think I’m talking about?” he asked, pressing me closer, but not kissing me, not yet.
